Overview

From the lush mountain parks of Banff and Jasper to the serene horizons of the Columbia Icefields, this journey takes you into the heart of the Rocky Mountains, continuing to the temperate and sheltered valleys of Bella Coola, before ending in the dazzling cities of Victoria and Vancouver.

The Self Drive Canadian Rockies and Pacific Northwest is a 15 day tour which includes 1 night Calgary, 2 nights Banff, 1 night Jasper, 1 night 108 Mile House, 2 nights Kleena Kleene, 1 night Bella Coola, 1 night Port Hardy, 1 night Campbell River, 2 nights Victoria and 1 night Vancouver.

 

Details

Day 1 -  Arrive Calgary

Arrive at Calgary International Airport, pick up your rental car and make your way to your downtown hotel.  The remainder of the day is at your leisure to create your own urban adventure in the Stampede City and form your first impressions of Western Canada

Day 2 - Calgary - Banff (129 km)

Leaving Calgary behind, you will set your sights today on the magnificent Rocky Mountains. Feel the majesty of these mountains as you first travel through the foothills and then enter Banff National Park where the craggy peaks loom larger the closer you get. After you have a rived in the bustling town of Banff, the remainder of the day is free to explore its charms

Day 3 - Banff

The entire day is free tour Banff and the surrounding area.  Hot sulphur water bubbling from the side of Sulphur Mountain was well known by the local aboriginal peoples of the 1800’s. The hot spring was “discovered” by a pair of American hunters in 1875, and Canadian Pacific Railway surveyors who happened upon the location in 1883. The Canadian government declared the hot spring to be a “federal preserve” in 1885 and two years later, Rocky Mountain National Park, Canada’s first national park, was officially established

Day 4 - Banff - Jasper (289 km)

Today travel the scenic Icefields Parkway. The Icefields Parkway is Canada’s second-highest paved highway, and is among the country’s most scenic drives. A kaleidoscope of new experiences is yours to discover amidst the waterfalls, mountain lakes and awesome glaciers, which dominate the landscape. Be sure to visit the Columbia Icefield, featuring a Parks Canada Interpretive Centre and Brewster’s famous Glacier Adventure on the Athabasca Glacier (Ice Explorer not included). The Athabasca Glacier is part of the Columbia Icefield, the greatest mass of ice outside the Arctic Circle.  The ice is 365 metres (1,200 feet) thick - about the height of the Empire State Building.  Only a few minutes away visit the Glacier Skywalk is Jasper National Parks’ newest attraction (admission not included).  Winner of the 2011 World Architecture Future Projects award, the Glacier Skywalk consists of a 400 metre interpretive boardwalk and a glass-floored observation platform extending 30 metres out over the Sunwapta Valley.  The walkway contains interpretive stations highlighting the ecology, geology, glaciology, Aboriginal history and social history of the area.  
Leaving the Athabasca Glacier, your camera should be ready to capture the majesty of the Athabasca Falls prior to your arrival into Jasper. Jasper, fascinating in beauty and history, is set amid some of the most rugged peaks in the Rockies

Day 5 - Jasper - 108 Mile House (455 km)

Today you drive along the scenic Yellowhead Highway en route to 108 Mile House. We suggest a stop at Mount Robson Provincial Park, home of the highest peak in the Rockies. From the park, you continue your journey into the dramatic cattle ranching country of the Cariboo Region.  The nearby 100 Mile House was established  in the 19th century during the days of the Cariboo Gold Rush, when a roadhouse  was built  here to service gold seekers heading into  the goldfields.

Day 6 - 108 Mile House - Kleena Klene (327 km) (L,D)

Today you continue westward through the pristine wilderness of the British Columbia interior. Travelling along the Bella Coola Highway you arrive at the Terra Nostra Guest Ranch, just west of the clear waters of Tatla Lake boasting some of the most stunning scenery in Canada.  Set in the rugged wilderness of the Chilcotin plateau, the Terra Nostra offers stunning mountain views, adventurous horseback riding and hiking trails along a scenic lake.  Lunch and dinner are included.

Day 7 - Kleena Klene (B, L, D)

Today is yours to explore the trails and backwoods  of the Terra Nostra Guest Ranch, set in the idyllic lands on the border of the majestic Coast Mountains. The ranch's rustic setting gives an impression of what mountain village life is like. All your exquisite meals are prepared in and served in nicely appointed log cabin dining room.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Day 8 - Kleena Klene - Bella Coola (215 km) (B)

Today after breakfast (included) you depart Kleena Kleena and travel further north  through the British Columbia mountain ranges before  turning west and journeying into the southern arm of Tweedsmuir National Park.  The largest protected park in the province, this area boasts a near untouched wilderness where visitors can observe the rugged landscape as it has been for hundreds  of centuries.  Leaving the park, you travel into the peaceful Bella Coola valley, home to the Nuxalt First Nations people and situated  at the headwaters  of a 100 km inlet leading to the Pacific Ocean.

Day 9 - Bella Coola to Port Hardy (119 km plus ferry)

Enjoy a full day ocean cruise (included) on board B.C. Ferries through a long and winding inlet waterway carved into the mountainous landscape. This placid, meandering cruise comes to an end in Port Hardy.

Day 10 - Port Hardy - Campbell River (232 km)

Your destination today is Campbell River, historically renowned as the “Salmon Capital of the World”.  Surrounded by the backdrop of Strathcona Provincial Park to the west and the Coastal Mountain range to the east, massive cruise ships pass right by Campbell River’s doorstep.

Day 11 - Campbell River - Victoria (265 km)

Continue along the coast, past quaint seaside towns such as Courtenay, Qualicum Beach, Parksville and Nanaimo. In Duncan, visit the Quw'utsun' Cultural and Conference Centre and in Chemainus, you can see the famous murals.  As you approach Victoria, British Columbia's capital, you will travel along the scenic Mala hat Drive, which affords generous vistas of the water and the Gulf Islands beyond.

Day 12 - Victoria

Today, explore this elegant capital city.  We suggest a visit to Beacon Hill Park and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. You may decide to drop in for afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel and experience a taste of British charm.

Day 13 - Victoria - Vancouver (112 km plus ferry)

Before you leave Victoria's charms and the beauty of the Inner Harbour, we recommend you visit Butchart Gardens (not included), a magnificent display of flowers and shrubs set in an old stone quarry.  Enjoy a mini-cruise on BC Ferries (included) guiding you around the many Gulf Islands, through the Strait of Georgia to mainland British Columbia for some last­ minute shopping.

Day 14 - Vancouver

Your tour ends this morning upon check out from your hotel. Make your way back to the airport for your return flight.
