Niagara on the Lake

Located in Southern Ontario where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario, Niagara on the Lake is more than just a Canadian town to pass through – it took a pivotal role in wars during the 18 and 19 centuries and as such has a great military heritage.

Most of the former military sites, such as Fort George, Navy Hall, and Butler's Barracks, have been restored and you can take a tour around. The town was a British military base and haven for pro-British loyalists who had to flee for their lives after the American Revolution. Indeed Niagara on the Lake prides itself on its British heritage, featuring the only Lord Mayor in Canada.

With comparatively mild climates, the area has become popular for wine growing, but it is also known in Canada for its gardens, art galleries, antique shops, and golf courses.

Make sure you visit The Old Town which will be familiar from a number of films which were shot around the cenotaph and clock tower.
